Forming a border to Boseong County, the Boseong River joins the Dongbuk Stream and Yongdeok Stream of Hwasun County, offering distinctive lakeside scenery and a deep and large lake.
Cold and fresh water from the deep valley of Mt. Jeam supplies the residents and rich fields of Boseong before flowing to the southern part of the peninsula following the Jeongja River and Boseong River before it merges into the Naehae Sea via the Seomjin River.
The construction of Juam Multipurpose Dam at the canyon between Daegwang-ri and Gusan-ri of Juam-myeon began 17 October 1984.
A manmade lake was created by the dam, adjoining the 3 counties of Boseong, Suncheon and Hwasun, and the lakeside scenery can be enjoyed in Yongam-ri, Deokchi-ri, and Juksan-ri of Mundeok-myeon, Boseong.
A unique iron arch bridge is situated near the borders of the 3 counties of Boseong, Suncheon, and Hwasun, offering the most outstanding scenery as a destination for family and friends.
The project to honor Dr. Seo Jae-pil’s achievements began in 1992.
The historic site projects include a shrine, Songjae-ro and Dongnimmun Independence Gate Tower, and the Memorial Park includes a sculpture park, the Relic Exhibition Hall and the reconstruction of his birthplace.
The Relic Exhibition Hall, which displays about 800 items from the life of Dr. Seo Jae-pil, will be a valuable National Education Center.
Dr. Seo Jae-pil was born 7 January 1864 in Ganae Village of Yongamri, Mundeok-myeon.
He led the three-day Gapsin Reform in December 1884.
After the failure of the Reform, he went into exile in the United States.
He returned home in 1895 as the first Korean Doctor of Medicine.
He devoted his life to the independence and modernization of Korea, publishing the Donnyipsinmun (Independence Newspaper) and forming the Dongniphyeophoe (Independence Association).
He passed away at 87 years in 1951, lamenting the fate of his mother country.
He spent his youth at his mother’s parents’ home. Although it was destroyed during the Korean War, the site was rebuilt in 2003 to honor the spirit of independence. (18-35 Ganae-gil Mundeok-myeon, Boseong County) Pine trees grow thick near the birthplace of Dr. Seo Jae-pil. Tea tasting is available at Cheongsim Dawon and various hands-on experiences are available, too.
Seo Jae-pil Memorial Park consists of the household shine around his birthplace, a scale model of Seoul Dongnimmun Independence Gate Tower and a sculpture park with Juamho in its background.
